Acclaimed on prestigious stages such as the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Semperoper Dresden, Staatsoper Hamburg, the Festspielhaus-Baden-Baden or the Opéra national of Paris, Swiss soprano Gabriela Scherer has earned international recognition for her ardent portrayals of roles by Gluck, Mozart, Puccini, Strauss, Verdi, Wagner and Weber.
Gabriela embarks on an exciting upcoming 2024/25 season in the Fall performing Liszt’s Die Legende von der heiligen Elisabeth with the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra at the Müpa Budapest and on tour at the Musikverein Wien, Concertgebouw Amsterdam and in Brussels. At the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, she sings her first Pamina in August Everding’s legendary staging of Die Zauberflöte, while at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and the Deutsche Oper am Rhein she revisits Senta in Der fliegende Holländer, a role she also performs in concert at the Philharmonie Luxembourg and at the Bozar Brussels. Gabriela Scherer also makes her debut at the Teatro Real Madrid in a Wagner Gala featuring excerpts from Der fliegende Holländer, Tannhäuser and Tristan und Isolde and sings her first Vier letzte Lieder by Richard Strauss with the Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestra at the International Music Festival of Besançon in France.
In the last three seasons, the soprano has made her debuts in a variety of iconic roles of the German jugendlich dramatische and the Italian Lirico spinto repertoire, such as Chrysothemis in Elektra (Semperoper Dresden), Leonore in Fidelio (Lisbon), the title roles of Arabella (Deutsche Oper Berlin) and Tosca (Dortmund), Elsa in Lohengrin, Elisabetta in Don Carlo and Agathe in Der Freischütz (Oper Leipzig).
She also has a special focus on Mozart, having sung her first Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in the 2023/24 season and Contessa in Le nozze di Figaro at the Semperoper Dresden.
Other important recent performances include Elisabetta and the title role of Ariadne auf Naxos at Staatsoper Unter den Linden, Arabella in a new production at Deutsche Oper Berlin, the title role in Gluck’s Iphigenie en Tauride at the Semperoper Dresden as well as Senta at the Staatsoper Hamburg, Deutsche Oper am Rhein and Teatro Nacional de São Carlos in Lisbon.
Additionally, she has successfully guest performed at the Opéra national de Paris, the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden and the Theater Luzern, among others.
Gabriela Scherer was born in Zurich and studied with Prof. Horiana Branisteanu and Prof. Elisabeth Wilke at the Mozarteum in Salzburg. She furthered her training at the Opera Studio of the Zurich Opera and in masterclasses with Angelika Kirchschlager, Francisco Araiza and Bernarda Fink. At the beginning of her career, she was a member of the ensemble at the Leipzig Opera and later joined the ensemble of the Bavarian State Opera in Munich.
She regularly collaborates with conductors such as Marc Albrecht, Riccardo Chailly, Adam Fischer, Lawrence Foster, John Eliot Gardiner, Thomas Guggeis, Christopher Hogwood, Marek Janowski, Axel Kober, Marc Minkowski, Kent Nagano, Donald Runnicles and Simone Young.
